Art and Design
Intent:
In our schools we value Art and Design and believe it is a vital and integral part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Learning about Art and Design provides the children with opportunities to develop and extend their skills. The children will be able to share and express their individual creativity based on their individual interests, thoughts and ideas. Our Art and Design lessons will help to provide the children with opportunities to recognise art in society and throughout history in a variety of ways. The children will be encouraged to develop a sense of wonder and curiosity about the World around them. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to investigate, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. The children will use a range of media and materials to develop their creativity. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design and use these skills to make comparisons between art work. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
Implementation:
In our schools we teach a skills-based Art curriculum which allows children to express their creative imagination and provides them with opportunities to develop their skills in Art:
- Exploring and Developing Ideas
- Drawing
- Painting
- Sculpture
- Collage
- Textiles
- Printing
We will also work to study key artists and will develop knowledge of their work. The children will be supported to develop their ideas and to explore their creativity. Art lessons in our Federation are taught in blocks and involve focussing on the necessary skills for our topic. The children will then be given further opportunities to create art pieces, develop their work and to develop their skills.
Our artwork is collected and evidenced in our Art sketchbooks, in Early years and KS1 on seesaw and sometimes larger pieces of work may be photographed and kept within their art book. Children in Early years and KS1 have access to an art area in class where they can explore their creativity further and consolidate their learning.
Impact:
Art and Design learning is loved by teachers and pupils across both schools. Our staff have high expectations of pupils and quality evidence of the children’s learning is presented in a variety of ways. The children’s knowledge of Art is recorded in their sketchbooks or seesaw and the development of their physical skills will be evaluated against skills progression and the National Curriculum for Art and Design. The children become more confident in their creativity and art skills and are able to analyse their own work and give opinions of their own and others' artwork. Through Art lessons the children also show development in their resilience and perseverance skills by continually evaluating, practicing and improving their work. The children in school can speak confidently about their Art and Design work and skills including using taught vocabulary.
